z/OS Connect support for IMS metadata queries and IMS commands / IMS metadata query and IMS command response in JSON format

Most of the new applications are web-based nowadays. The easiest way to process data in web-based applications is to receive and send the data in JSON format and transform JSON data into JavaScript objects. That is why z/OS Connect uses JSON instead of XML or a proprietary data format. Besides calling IMS transactions z/OS Connect should be also able to query DBD and PSB metadata from the IMS Catalog and it should be able to issue IMS commands. In both cases the response should be provided in JSON format.

For a DBD and / or PSB metadata query response it would be desirable to have a JSON response structured in the same way as DBDs respectively PSBs are structured. For an IMS command response it would be desirable to have a JSON response structured in the same way as SPOC responses are structured.

Besides z/OS Connect the IMS Universal Drivers should provide not only a getCatalogMetadataAsXML method but also a getCatalogMetadataAsJSON method. For this the GUR call within IMS should be able to provide the Catalog metadata in JSON Format. The Universal Driver itself should also use JSON format, because this will speed up metadata querying during connection setup for large PSBs. There are a lot of large PSBs with numerous DB PCBs out there - we know that, because we are an IT service provider. If the GUR call supports Catalog metadata also in JSON, no XML to JSON transformation would be necessary within z/OS Connect.

Thank you for your interest in keeping IMS a vital and successful product. Software development has continuously evolved during IMS's lifetime, and so has IMS itself. We have kept pace with, adopted, and implemented many industry standard best practices within our organization, including Continuous Delivery, Design Thinking, and Agile.

When choosing new features to add from the list of requirements in our backlog, we assess which will bring the most value to as many clients as possible and prioritize those.

At this time, after reviewing this request for enhancement and assessing its potential value, we have decided to reject it. The reason we are rejecting RFE ID 73351 is because it is not the product direction to provide IMS commands processing through z/OS Connect. A standalone REST API solution to support IMS commands outside of z/OS Connect is currently under consideration.

    Thank you.
