IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

CRUISE Provides additional TARGET options for Capture.

TPFUG_Req_Number: DF08188S
ORIGIN DATE: 03/31/2008

REQUIREMENT ABSTRACT

CRUISE should provide one or more additional options for the TARGET= parameter that currently supports TPF and MVS values.

REQUIREMENT DESCRIPTION

CRUISE should provide additional values for the TARGET= parameter to support more data output options related to the Capture function (FUNCTION-CAPTURE). This would allow TPFDF files to be written to other than tape medium and allow other output format options in addition to the standard TPFDF physical blocks. Support should be provided to allow data to be written to the TPF file system or directly transmitted to other TPF or non-TPF systems through MQ Series.

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS

The new functions should be seamlessly integrated into the existing CRUISE framework, so that existing capabilities are not affected.

ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS

Applications can be written to cover each scenario and each data transfer requirement. This will result in many similar applications and functions with different designs and requirements, leading to a complex and difficult to manage data handling environment. At the same time, the functionality and integrity of these application utilities cannot provide the same level of user friendliness and monitoring and control and robustness that CRUISE provides.

SOLUTION CONSIDERATIONS

A TARGET=TFS option would allow TPFDF to be written as a one file to a TFS directory. The data could be written as a sequence of physical TPFDF blocks, delimited by CR/LF or user specified delimiter. Alternatively the logical record data could be extracting and appending to data from the AREA= parameter in the DBDEF so it could be written as a byte stream. This composite data could then be written as a flat file in a TFS directory. Another option would be to support TARGET=MQ so that the logical record or physical blocks could be sent to another host or system using the MQ Series interface. Throttling controls could be used to pace the transfer and prevent system overload. At the same time a RESTORE should be able to retrieve blocks from a MQ Series Queue that were transmitted by a Capture running on another system. This would allow data to be transferred between TPF hosts without the need for tapes or user written data transfer routines.

Based on the latest TPFUG ballot results, IBM does not expect to implement this in the foreseeable future.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - z Systems Software
    Product - z/TPF

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - WebSphere
    Product family - Transaction Processing
    Product - z/TPF
