COBOL source input stored as compressed encrypted part of load module

Hi, to avoid loss of COBOL (or any other) source code in the future can the IBM compilers please generate a load module that stores inside it the full COBOL source input in a compressed and encrypted form which is then wrapped and protected before entering the Linkage Editor Binder etcc.

This would allow the full source code to be extracted one day if the actual source was lost for any reason. IBM could offer a "disassembler" program for every language it supports to unwarp, unencrypt and uncompress the load module to extract the exact source that when into build it.

    Hi Robert,

Going forward, using TEST(SEP,SOURCE) is likely the best option. This means we will generate all debug sections including the captured source section in a side file. However, we don't think encrypting this data will be feasible. As Denis pointed out, this is very similar to https://ibm-z-software-portal.ideas.ibm.com/ideas/COBOLVUE-I-353 , but has been rejected. For the same reasons, we will be rejecting the current idea as well.

    Regards,

    Basil

Hi, we would like to know the following to help us determine if this is a feasible idea or not:

    1) Which languages would you need encrypted, is it COBOL only?
    2) What type of encryption key do you plan to use?
    3) What kind of source code needs to be included ie macro expansion source code, user source code, copybook source code?

    Hi,

This is already done by [NO]TEST(DWARF,NOSEPARATE) compilation option?
Do you want to have only source code without debug information?

    Thanks.

This idea is being investigated further.
