This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

This RFE has been delivered in the Enterprise COBOL V6.2 July PTF via APAR PI99703.
Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - Programming Languages
Product - COBOL Compilers
For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
Brand - Rational
Product family - Design & development
Product - COBOL Compilers
This is a valid RFE. Accepting RFE and will update it once it has been put into plan.
The 2014 COBOL Standard supports this with the single function:
MOVE FUNCTION TRIM(myfield LEADING) TO mynewfield
MOVE FUNCTION TRIM(myfield TRAILING) TO mynewfield
MOVE FUNCTION TRIM(myfield) TO mynewfield
When the second parameter is omitted it functions to trim both leading and trailing (left and right) spaces.
Perhaps it's useful to think about two functions LTRIM and RTRIM for trimming on left / on right side. I don't know more the case where I needed that functionality . . . ;-) and had to code it by hand.
A very good usecase for a trim function.
