This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

For 32-bit applications, the debug format on AIX, stabstrings, uses a two byte field for storing line numbers. Therefore the line numbers that can be represented are 0 - 65535. Therefore source files with more than 65535 lines will cause difficulties when one attempts to debug them. There are no plans to address this limitation. Note that 64-bit applications do not have this limitation, but TxSeries is only 32-bits, so 64-bit compilation is not an option here.
The problem can be avoided by reducing the size of all of the source files to less than 65535 lines. Reducing the size of their source files will also be beneficial if Surecomp decides to compile with the OPTIMIIZE option in the future.

IBM COBOL for AIX is a continuous delivery offering, and aims to satisfy the needs of a rapidly evolving market segment.
Product strategy evolves and requirements are continuously evaluated against that strategy. This RFE has recently been reappraised against the wider product strategy and does not fall into IBMs delivery plans for the next 12 month. Whilst this RFE might be valid and we might look to deliver it longer term, this RFE is being rejected at this time. The requirement will be kept in our internal RFE backlog and might be reassessed in the future.
Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - Programming Languages
Product - COBOL Compilers
For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
Brand - Rational
Product family - Design & development
Product - COBOL Compilers
Long term goal
This is a known problem that requires a re-design of several components. It is on our list of things to do, but we will not be able to get this change into the next release of COBOL for AIX
Looking in to this one
