Sign the EKMF log with a key that offers up-to-date security, i.e. AES-HMAC or ECC 500+ Bits

Requirement 1:

The currently used DES keys for securing the log of EKMF are not anymore allowed in our organization. More current crypto algorithms have to be used for new log entries. Currently accepted are AES-HMAC and ECC with more than 500 Bits. It must not be possible to create fake log entries for example by using a key stored in an HSM without an active EKMF session to the HSM.
Target date: in 2023

Requirement 2:

Existing log entries also have to be secured by the new algorithm. An idea might be to add a second signature to each log entry. Validation of entries must only be done with the latest signature on each log entry so that old signature keys can be deleted.
Target date: first half of 2024

Idea priority Medium

Work is being done on the EKMF Workstation to support HMAC based protection of the audit log entries. This should meet requirement #1

Requirement 2 is not yet planned.

A larger redesign of the EKMF audit logging system is being considered and will include a change of MAC algorithm applied to the audit log records. Unfortunately it will not fit in the backlog for 2023.
