IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Avoid copying arguments [RTC 32246]

Although the semantics of parameter passing in called programs is call-by-reference, the argument is copied in order to enable implicit type conversion. However, KBC applications always calls programs with an argument whose type is identical to the parameter's. Hence no type coercion and therefore no copy is required.
When a new element needs to be added to an array, the natural way of doing so is by using such functions as appendElement() and insertElement(). This turns out to be suboptimal because these functions are call-by-value and hence copy their argument. The rationale for this copy is that a type coercion may be needed from the type of the actual argument to the type of the elements of the target array.
At KBC, these type coercions are usually not needed as the runtime type of the argument is identical to the formal parameter type. In these circumstances we request that the EGL implementation avoids a copy.

We've been investigation this together with IBM already (Paul Hoffman and Matthew Heitz).

Thank you for this suggestion. This is one of several enhancements we are looking at to improve Java runtime performance when processing structured records. We expect to implement improvements in this area in a 7.5.x fix pack.
