Enhanced Sysplex Distributor Support for z/OS Connect - SERVERWLM for DVIPAs

In order to achieve high availability in z/OS Connect, the product documentation (https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zos-connect/zosconnect/3.0?topic=availability-sysplex-distributor) recommends use of a DVIPA to distribute workload between multiple LPARs. However, the proposed method using WLM only takes into account LPAR health/weighting via the BASEWLM option. This does not take the ‘health’ of the z/OS Connect server, and whether it is inoperable/degraded, into consideration.

We would like the option to specify SERVERWLM distribution on these DVIPAs, for both OpenAPI 2.0 API Provider and OpeAPI 2.0 API Requester. This would align with what has been implemented for IMS Connect (https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/ims/15.3.0?topic=connect-ims-support-zos-sysplex-distributor). Our understanding that that this would require z/OS Connect (not the underlying Liberty server) to send a numeric ‘server health status’ report to WLM on startup and upon server health changes.

The business value of this new functionality lies in improved performance and availability of our z/OS Connect service. The capability for z/OS Connect to 'self-heal' by redirecting traffic away from affected servers dynamically would greatly reduce the impacts to our consumers, compared to the manual activities required today to achieve similar results.

    This requirement has been considered and whilst it is valid, it is not something that is controled within z/OS Connect. It is function that would need to be added within Liberty. Based on their current plans and priorities it is not likely that this could be implemented in the

    next 12 months. This IDEA is therefore being declined. If you wish to pursue this directly with the liberty team, please raise a new IDEA for them.
