In a GDPS MGM TOPOLOGY the KG/KR analyzes if the tertiary disks are ONLINE by any system, before accepting the GDASD START SECONDARY RESTART command. 

After a recovery simulation test on the B.RS1 disks (tertiary disk in Region B), we had problems in the synchronization process of the GM copy (GDASD START SECONDARY RESTART command) when having some disks ONLINE from an emergency system (it was used occasionally to correct certain errors found in the simulation tests)
That would cause us to accept the SCRIPT and we would have to open a severity 1 case in order to determine the reason. Once analyzed, we had to carry out several recovery actions, until we were finally able to reactivate the copy.
In our opinion, the KG should consult the KR (the only system with access to the tertiary devices) if there are systems that have the tertiary devices ONLINE, before starting the resynchronization process of the GM copy (equivalent to the GDPS QO command (PATH GROUP REPORT))

    We do not use FC1 in Region B. The structure we have is MGM3SITE with only tertiary disks (B.RS1) and GMFC.

    In HCD we have the disks as ONLINE=NO on the other system, but to fix a boot problem of the recovery simulation environment in Region B, ONLINE disks were put on another system. We forgot to put them OFFLINE afterwards and when we tried to perform the RESYNC of the GM copy it caused the error. Since the GDPS itself (when querying with QO on the panels) knows that there is 'QHA active' on some system, we think that the SCRIPT should query this before proceeding to give sync commands.

    We could have this situation only if we mess up our HCD config to have other systems connected to these devices and have those devices configured as offline=no or have those devices configured online by ???

    But sounds like an extra failsave..

    FIS/Worldpay makes use of GMFC for testing, thus no vote.

    We are MGM4SITE and do our testing from RS2 in recovey site, so this would not be meaningful to us. (so not voting)

    We do not use tertiaries for any tests, therefore cannot vote for this one.

    Good morning,


    In the case TS011828953 they recommended me to use the tertiary disk B.RS1. We have not any IPL tests with the GMFC. This disk is ESE, could it cause us any problem?

    Do clients using the GMFC leave the GM copy in GC state?

    In the event that some system had the GMFC disk also ONLINE, wouldn't the process of going to the GM copy fail anyway?

    A GDPS MGM3SITE best practice is to perform DR tests off a FC and the large majority of clients do this. Have you considered performing a DR test using FC?
