The overhead of producing numcheck IGZ0279W message is ridiculously high

In our experience, the overhead of checking for valid numeric values associated with the numcheck(xxx, msg) compiler option is tolerable. But if an invalid numeric value is found, the overhead of actually producing the IGZ0279W warning message is ridiculously high causing CICS transactions to time out e.g. a transaction that normally runs sub-second, adding a IGZ0279W warning made it run for over 10 seconds.

This overhead makes the NUMCHECK(MSG) option unusable as a passive problem detection tool in shared testing environments.

Note: Using COBOL options NOTEST or TEST(NODWARF) might help the performance though the gain varies depending on the system and you lose the benefit of having DWARF.
